Since construction in 1893 the City Centre building at 179 Wollaton Street (click here for a map), has been put to a variety of uses. These include; offices of a private detective, an advertising agency, a company of  accountants, a building surveyor and a clairvoyant. Enterprises that require skill, expertise and a certain amount of faith in the future. The establishment of 179 Wollaton Street as Fine Art studios in 1985, continued the tradition of professional expertise and commitment, but with the vital added ingredient of a diverse artistic creativity that has become the hallmark of the artists who work in the Wollaton Street Studios.

Wollaton Street Studios is located in a three storey building dating from the nineteenth century. It is a building that uses the interior space very efficiently; six separate studios are arranged a central stairwell, two studios to each floor.

Each studio has a high ceiling, typical of the Victorian era, and faces out onto the surrounding area, ensuring a well lit and spacious environment.

The character of each studio echoes the character of the artist working in it. From the dynamic disorder of the maker of large abstract paintings to the concentrated stillness of the painter of  life acutely observed.

Wollaton Street is completely artist-run. It allows artists a place to work and to discuss the development of their work with fellow artists. It also functions as a place where those interested in contemporary art are able to see and experience the diversity of its making with the artists’ resident there.

In addition to the individual activity that each artist engages in, the studios also allow artists to undertake group activities such as Open Studios, when members of the public are invited to visit the studios.

Wollaton Street Studios is also actively involved in making international links in Europe and the USA.
