Oldknows Studio Group is one of the most established artists' studios in the East Midlands, an example of a thriving artistic community producing contemporary art outside London.

 

Nine practising artists work on the third floor of a former lace factory to create a diverse range of visual art, including painting (abstract and figurative), sculpture, photography and mixed media work.

 

 

A number of factors were important in providing the impetus for the setting up of the group. A major concern was the need for inexpensive and spacious studios. This, along with essential requirements for support systems of communication and discussion, as well as the practical issues of shared resources and networks, were the motivating forces.

 

For a number of years the reputation and the promotion of the studios was through its vanguard, the Oldknows Gallery, housed in the distinctive apex of the Oldknows Building. Over the years the gallery hosted a diverse range of exhibitions by Artists from the UK, Europe and the USA. The Gallery was involved in a number of collaborative projects with other artists groups, such as Transmission Gallery in Glasgow. Artists who exhibited in the Oldknows Gallery at the beginning of their careers have now gone on to establish themselves at an international level.

 

With the closure of the Oldknows Gallery in 1995, the group sought new ways to promote the studio group and also to raise the profile of the artists. Since 1998 the group has been involved in a number of open studio events, and has secured Lottery funding for creative programmes and educational workshops.

Individual group members are all practising artists who exhibit locally, nationally and internationally. Their work can be found in both public and private collections.
