Anna Davies
As a member of Nottingham Artists Group I work from my studio space sculpting unique figures, each with a character of its own. Using a variety of hardwoods such as oak, beech, lime and ash, and employing traditional methods of carving, I create these sculptures, combining timber with found objects, giving a dimension and a style that is, I feel, unique to my work. Each piece is then sanded and painted with acrylic paints which contrast and compliment the woodgrain and bring an animated quality to the work. Sculptures are then finished with a natural burnishing oil to enhance the beautiful woodgrain, intensify the colour and to give an extra durability to the pieces. My works vary in size but range, on the whole, between 30-50cm. Having qualified as a carpenter and joiner I am able to transfer these learnt techniques to the construction of my sculptures, ensuring a strength and stability expected in such high quality work. It is difficult to say where my inspiration comes from, but I think that some of it derives from my time spent in working in the theatre. Certainly my interest in automatons came whilst working towards a diploma in prop making and scene painting, an interest explored and developed throughout the years. Prices start from £85 Commisions considered |
