FELTED TEXTILES After teaching art and textiles for a number of years I have turned my hand to felt making.I have become very interested in the fibres and am trying to develop a painterly quality in my work.I have been looking at natural forms and how the texture in nature can be captured in fibres.I have worked on several landscape pieces and found capturing light effects a real and ongoing challenge. I use the wool fibres very finely often using individual fibres at a time this creates a feeling of translucency in my work. I am very much still in the learning process and each new piece creates a different challenge. I have lived in Lady Bay for 20 years and taught fine art and art textiles in local schools and in London. I have a degree in Textile Design obtained at Leeds University. Recently I decided the time was right to return to my own work and take a good look at textiles again. I have been exploring the felt making process and found it to be a fascinating and versatile medium in which to work. I have been using the woolen fibres in the same way that a fine artist uses paint, to create detail and texture. I have been exploring a variety of subject matter but am mainly interested in natural forms and landscapes. My most recent pieces have been developed from photos I took in Sherwood Forest on a bitterly cold winters day. I have tried to capture the light effects through the silver birches and the subtle winter colours. I create my pictures by using very fine layers of fibres which gives a delicate and translucent quality to the finished piece. I am still very much in the learning process and hope to continue to develop and explore this medium.
