Visitors to Lady Bay Open Studios 2003

This year has been the busiest yet since the Open Studios began in 1995:

  • We held the 8th annual Open Studios Weekend, 17/18 May 2003 and attracted over 1,500 visitors from across the borough, county and beyond;

  • We opened 10 venues, including community halls, studios, workshops, private homes and gardens across Lady Bay;

  • We invited 30 artists to put on 22 exhibitions, 10 activities and workshops, and 2 music groups to perform in our café;

  • We had 50 local volunteers, giving over 500 hours over the weekend; the preparation alone is equivalent to a full-time post for 4 months;

As well as the Open Studios Weekend, we took on three other projects:

  • Creation of a textile map of Lady Bay through workshops at a series of community events: this now has permanent place in All Hallows Hall;
  • A two-day arts festival with Lady Bay Primary School, in which 19 artists worked with parents and teachers to give 350 children a unique creative experience – 47 days’ of workshop time donated to the school;
  • A unique pilot DV Film course, supported by the Borough and County Councils, Awards for All and others, to give 14 young people a chance to work with artists to make movies;

At the same time, we made the organisation more professional by:

  • Adopting a written constitution with the help of Rushcliffe CVS;
  • Recruiting over 300 members in our first year;
  • Holding our first AGM and electing our first management committee.

And we’re building future developments by:

  • Connecting with the Arts Council supported open studios network;
  • Taking part in Nottingham’s You Are Here 2004 visual arts festival;
  • Working with other projects in programming, teaching and advising.

OUR THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE
