 Continuum series

 1996-present

The current Continuum series of work is non-narrative and abstract; paintings,
drawings and prints, are based on continuous reverting lines. Forming planes
and often grouping to create a circular form or a space vacated by one.
These lines may appear organic but are constructed with compasses
and contained within a structural framework. Some works may appear simple
and pure of line. Others are complex, full of layers revealing depths
of
under-painting, showing glimpses of process and history.

Aiming to create...

...A linear structure that holds a perfect rhythmical balance.

 Palimpsest series

Recently a new series of paintings - Palimpsest have developed out of the Continuum
works. Visual past layers have become more apparent and left open to interpretation,
revealing once hidden depths of under-painting, allowing process to read. With the top
surface layer forming lines and structure created out of negative space, echoing the
circular voids of past series.

 Disintegration series
 1993-5

The later paintings in the series, shown in the YBA show at Silverstein Gallery,
New York [1995] were clinical in comparison. Their structures refined, balanced
and the depth-of-field visibly narrowed. The grounds were painted white and the
colour palette became; cooler, harder, muted. The widths of the band narrowed
and the full structure of form totally contained – tangent to the canvas edge.

 Inter series

In the following short Inter series [late 1995] the structure and balance became
the main focus and for the first time a coloured painted ground was adopted.
Inter no.1 became the first serious attempt at a purely formal structural painting.
A skeleton, un-reliant on colour - white ground with the majority of the bands
white as well. Though unsuccessful as a pure white work, it was close to being
complete in its formal composition and balance.

 Disintegration series
 1993-5

The Disintegration series [1993-5] rationale formed around fragmented
elements of a circle clustering into components of solid circular forms
or layered bands. These multi-layered bands were re-connected and orbited
around the original axis points [origins].

Two distinct groups evolved in the 20 numbered canvases. In the early works
use of controlled geometry, superimposed over revived paintings of 1989-92.
Their compositions and structures reworked and overlaid with;
highly saturated colour, inter-connected expansive bands, in a combination
of textured and transparent layers, that moved in and out of the picture frame.

Along side 12 paper works, the paintings No’s 4–13 were exhibited in the
Disintegration
solo at Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham of 1994 with
accompanying catalogue.
