3 Line Continuum Magen

2006
Oil on Linen

275 x 245 cm / 9x8 ft

Private collection, New York
Installation shot - photo credit MT

This large scale work was painted on site, during the summer and autumn of 2006.
A composition developed over several days, through initial drawings and studies.
These were created in direct response to the architecture and interior of the house,
a former synagogue in the East Village of Manhattan.

3 Line Continuum Magen
detail

2006
Oil on Linen

A symmetrical linear structure, painted in two distinct layers creating
a visual rhythmical balance.

The 1st layer is constructed of 3
solid Continuum lines formed the under layer.
This linear structure was inspired by the remaining 3 facade windows
of the
synagogue,
that span from floor-to-ceiling and incorporate the Star of David.

This same linear structure was
then inverted and drawn-out over the 1st layer.
The final surface layer of white was painted on and wiped away across
the whole linen, only leaving open the 2nd drawn linear structure visible
and forming
negative lines.

Continuum in Balance explores the notions of harmony
within independence and symmetry.

A large scale mirrored diptych commissioned for the reception,
responding to symmetry of THE ARC building.

3 continuous lines formed by inter-connecting arcs create the linear structure
of each painting, but these lines are not painted, they are open spaces-
negative lines
between the solid areas of muted colour. The aim is to balance the complexity
of the linear structure with a simplicity of the tonal layering ...

... creating two sides, two views.

Inviting communication between both, allowing investigation of the differences
and embracing harmony.
