Leotropic

Architectural issues have always been constant in my work

Previous work has been concerned with the protection and exposure of someone enclosed in a structure at the same time. My interest is in creating structures that are fully occupiable and give the illusion of shelter, but also allow the occupant to be placed under a microscope and scrutinised by onlookers.

Leotropic is one of an ongoing series of pieces influenced by the correlations between natural objects and architectural designs. This piece is drawn from a number of areas including shell structures, ‘The golden section’ and spiral stairs.

Tunnel Vision

Standing 8 feet tall this is a cylindrical structure made in two sections to allow someone to occupy the internal space. Spy holes are located in each piece at different heights and locations this allows the occupier to view the surrounding external area. Alternatively is also puts the occupier under scrutiny.

Swash

More recent work is concerned with the translucently that can be created in previously solid objects or materials

Swash is the first in this succession of woodcarvings. Initially influenced by a collection of stones with holes formed by the sea, they are also a connection back to other work such as Tunnel Vision.

Trunk I, II, III, IV

Each of these four slices are cut from the same trunk, each hole relates to one another with a hole appearing smaller at one end gradually gaining in size as it travels from one section to another.

Animism

I have always been interested in natural objects and how they are structured creating parallels with familiar objects. This particular piece uses naturally discarded twigs from the horse chestnut tree to create dog like animals.
